How to Create Your Own “Year in Review” From: Harvard Business Review As the year comes to a close, it’s easy to get distracted bydeadlinesand miss out on valuable opportunities to accelerate our growth. If we don’t take the time to reflect on what’s gone before, we’re more likely to make the same mistakes and less able to apply what we’ve learned going forward. deadline deadline /ˈded.laɪn/ 表示“最后期限;截止日期”,英文解释为“a time or day by which something must be done”举个🌰:There's no way I can meet that deadline. To take control of your career development, you need to identify and take ownership of what you should do differently in the coming year. Soseizethis opportunity to press pause to reflect on the last 12 months, play it back to identify what worked and what didn’t, andfast-forwardto apply what you’ve learned. Here are three steps to get your own “year in review” started: 以下是开始你的“年度回顾”三步骤: seize seize /siːz/ 1)表示“没收;查获”,英文解释为“If the police or other officials seize something, they take possession of it with legal authority.”举个🌰:Customs officers have seized 10 kilos of heroin. 2)表示“抓住;夺过;夺取;攫取;抓获”,英文解释为“to take something quickly and keep or hold it”举个🌰:I seized his arm and made him turn to look at me. fast-forward fast-forward /ˌfɑːstˈfɔː.wəd/ 表示“(使)(录音录像设备)快速进带,快进”,英文解释为“If you fast-forward a recording, or if it fast-forwards, you make it play at very high speed so that you get to the end or a later part more quickly.”举个🌰:I hate this song - I'll fast-forward to the next one. At this time of year, our brains can feel particularlyfrantic. However, slowing down is often what helps us speed up, andzooming outgives us theperspectivethat willpropelus forward. When we identify what we’ve done well, we canstretchour strengths even more in the future. When we spot the mistakes we’ve made, we learn from them rather than repeat them. frantic frantic /ˈfræntɪk/ 1)表示“(因恐惧或忧虑而)发狂似的,情绪失控的”,英文解释为“If you are frantic, you are behaving in a wild and uncontrolled way because you are frightened or worried.”举个🌰:A bird had been locked in and was by now quite frantic. 2)表示“紧张忙乱的”,英文解释为“If an activity is frantic, things are done quickly and in an energetic but disorganized way, because there is very little time.”举个🌰:A busy night in the restaurant can be frantic in the kitchen. zoom out zoom /zuːm/ in/out表示“(使照相机或计算机)画面放大/缩小”,英文解释为“to (cause a camera or computer to) make the image of something or someone appear much larger and nearer, or much smaller and further away”举个🌰:At the beginning of the film, the camera zooms in to show two people sitting by the side of a river. perspective perspective /pəˈspek.tɪv/ 表示“(思考问题的)角度,观点,想法”,英文解释为“a particular way of considering something”举个🌰:Her attitude lends a fresh perspective to the subject. propel propel /prəˈpel/ 表示“推动;驱动;推进”,英文解释为“To propel something in a particular direction means to cause it to move in that direction.”举个🌰:The tiny rocket is attached to the spacecraft and is designed to propel it toward Mars. The film propelled him to international stardom. stretch stretch /stretʃ/ 作名词,表示“(连续的)一段时间”,英文解释为“a continuous period of time”举个🌰:The elderly generally need far less rest than the young, and tend to sleep in several short stretches. 的限度;竭尽”,英文解释为“to go as far as or past the usual limit of something”举个🌰:Many families' budgets are already stretched to breaking point. 2)表示“伸出;伸长;拉伸”,英文解释为“to cause something to reach, often as far as possible, in a particular direction”举个🌰:She stretched out her hand and helped him from his chair. 3)表示“展开,铺开;延伸”,英文解释为“to spread over a large area or distance”举个🌰:A huge cloud of dense smoke stretched across the horizon. 4)表示“延续”,英文解释为“to spread over a long period of time”举个🌰:The dispute stretches back over many years. As the name suggests, “quiet questions” work best in surroundings that support you to be thoughtful. An ideal environment is one where you’re unlikely to be interrupted and can take the time to think through your responses. As you answer each quiet question, be conscious of rushing your answers and of the risk ofrecency bias. Set yourself a five-minute timer for each question to help you to think more deeply, and use your calendar for data so you’re not relying only on your most recent experiences. Mind maps and free-writing are useful approaches to capture your insights. Ask yourself these questions and write down the answers: 问自己这些问题,并写下答案: recency recency /ˈriː.sən.si/ 表示“最近,新近”,英文解释为“the fact of being recent, or the degree to which something is recent”举个🌰:Do photographic memories depend on recency? 照相式记忆取决于近期接触吗? bias bias /ˈbaɪ.əs/ 表示“偏见;偏心;偏向”,英文解释为“a strong feeling in favour of or against one group of people, or one side in an argument, often not based on fair judgement”举个🌰:Employers must consider all candidates impartially and without bias. - When have I learned the most this year? - What do I feel most proud of? - Who has helped me be at my best? - How have my strengths helped me succeed? - What’s the one thing I wish I’d done differently? 2. Instead, we need to find focus and bepragmaticabout what’s possible. demotivating demotivating /ˌdiːˈməʊ.tɪ.veɪ.tɪŋ/ 表示“使人泄气”,英文解释为“making someone less enthusiastic about a job or task”举个🌰:Constant criticism can be very demotivating. pragmatic pragmatic /præɡˈmæt.ɪk/ 表示“讲究实际的,重实效的;实用主义的”,英文解释为“solving problems in a sensible way that suits the conditions that really exist now, rather than obeying fixed theories, ideas, or rules”举个🌰:In business, the pragmatic approach to problems is often more successful than an idealistic one. The focus finder tool acts as a forcing function to identify the most important action you want to take across a few different areas.
